Exciting news just in with the Glitch Mob announcing the release date of their new EP entitled “We Can Make The World Stop” to drop July 12th. The boys have shared a free download of “Warrior Concerto“, the first track off the new album.

The Glitch Mob continue to innovate and create quality sounds that translate to something very big live. I had the privilege to see them live last year (2010) in Sydney at the Parklife Festival. It was definitely in the top 5 gigs I’ve seen of all time. If you ever get a chance to see these cats they won’t disappoint. Here’s a clip from that set (excuse quality):

Their live set is awesome – full of so much energy. Live drums (albeit quantized for perfection but it’s part of their smorgasbord), synths & they get the audience engaged. The track in the clip contains a sample from a Collie Budz tune. One of the things I love doing is tracking down samples and finding more talent – Bermuda rapper Collie Budz got the skills but more on him later.

Check out my short & sweet review of their recent album “Drink The Sea” – it’s off the hook. A little secret… “Between Two Points” featuring Swan makes a beautiful alarm tone. Thanks Glitch Mob and keep up the great work! Looking forward to hearing more

It’s called ‘Hangover (BaBaBa)’ by Buraka Som Sistema and features a catchy ‘BaBaBaBaBaBa’ hook from when the group were in Rangel ‘City’ in Luanda, Angola, visiting some of their favourite Kuduro producers.

One of the band members, Kalaf Angelo, recalls about one of the producers they visited, DJ Znobia:

“He played us one of his tracks featuring Nacobeta, a local MC, where he used this hook and it immediately got our attention! We then used it in some of our early shows and the crowd loved it because of its simplicity and raw energy. While working on the new album, the beat we produced with Stereotyp had that same energy so it made perfect sense to bring it back for the chorus and close the cycle.”

It certainly got me energised to start off my Thursday morning. Go see Buraka’s blog – some interesting stuff there like this cover of Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance” they did for Dr Martens!

I haven’t written a post since late November last year so this better be good hehe. I’ve really been unimpressed with the latest in what’s being produced in what they’re calling dubstep these days. Squeeks, bleeps and wobble were all great the first 500 times heard but serious originality and simplicity is lacking these days. When I first started listening to dubstep a few years back we had Skream, N-Type, Coki, Benga, Cluekid, MRK1, Loefah, The Bug, Vex’d, Darqwan, Mala, etc.. all doing orginal sounds. So it’s great to hear a well-produced tune by none other than the man Benga. Is it a remix of Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”? Seems to have some of the samples…

Check out the fierce track and official video below:

Here’s a link to a free download of Benga’s “Smack Your Bitch Up”.

I remember when I first saw Benga here in Adelaide at the Rhino Room. The place was packed and there was an amazing vibe, a crazy energy about the room. Dubstep was new back then and Benga dropped beats like no other that night. I was hooked and wanted more so wasn’t too long later I bought a copy of “Diary of an Afro Warrior”. When I heard 26 Basslines my jaw literally dropped and I had no choice but to give it a long rinse. I also made a ringtone out of it.. I guess that’s my way of sharing it to the world being no DJ hehe. Download the 26 Basslines iPhone Ringtone here.

Solid work on this one Benga

I saw Benga again with Skream in Sydney a couple of years ago at the Art Factory. That was a pretty insane show since N-Type was playing a couple of doors down. I had tickets to both (N-Type smashed it at The Gaff)… N-Type ended up joining Skream & Benga after his set finished and decided to MC. And I saw them again another time to a packed crowd at the Gaelic in Sydney last year. If you’re thinking about checking Benga out and happen to read this post, don’t hesitate, he won’t let you down (just don’t give him too much beer). Be prepared to dance your ass off!

I was in Melbourne this weekend and was lucky enough to see a gig that was fantastic right at the end of the trip. I read about this night: Ghetto Arts in a post on Facebook by Men Imitating Machines (more on these guys later) and was intrigued. So I went along to the gig and saw a lot of nice chilled acts for some good Sunday vibes & phat beats.

The stand-out was High Society (a band recently Unearthed by Triple J featuring 7 members (including 3 MCs/Vocalists) and full of stage presence. The tracks were great, the energy was paramount & the toungue-in-cheek banter in-between tracks was also entertaining. The standout from the group was Hyina Mufasa who melded soulful vocals with fast-paced rhymes. The horn section was pretty cool too.

A little hard to find there stuff online as they’re quite fresh.. check out The High Society’s Facebook page for some tracks & videos. Here’s ‘A Sketch City Movie’ that features one of their tracks as well as a showcase of other fine Melbourne Hip Hop talent.

I want to go back to Melbourne – so many nice people.. so full of art.. so much soul.. good times!

Was stumbling around on the Planet Mu website the other day and found the Power Grid E.P. by Terror Danjah. The stand out track by far for me is #7 “Horror Story” – nice distorted bass. Just how I like it. Very clean production. So phat – can’t wait to give it a rinse on the Bose.

I like the ping pong sample in track #3 “Pulse”. Seems to be the year of the ping pong sample – Lorn on Glass & Silver, Flying Lotus on Table Tennis.

Power Grid, track 5, is mad too – quality production. Mo distortion, amens & lots of juicy samples filling up the space. It’s like Pop Rocks Popping candy for my ears.

Here is a wicked mix by Terror Danjah made in 2009 which opens with Horror Story:
