It’s been an excellent birthday weekend so far… I caught up with a lot of people I haven’t scene in a while, heard some live amens and soaked in the World Cup atmosphere. I saw Total Science for free on Friday night (generously put on by Foreign Dub) and last night I saw Salmonella Dub at the Coogee Bay Hotel. Now THAT was an amazing gig!

We got there just as Tijuana Cartel started playing – great timing really to see their set of acoustic rhythms infused with electronic sounds. The lead guy played some amazing chords (check out the video below for a sample) and made up for the missing live drummer.

They certainly hyped the crowd and filled the room with a lot of energy. They had a couple more guys on stage and the energy was much like in this other version of Persian.

After a short break the MC from Salmanello Dub launched on stage and hyped the crowd again. The played a lot of really sexy dub and it was a really soothing experience. There was a perfect blend of down tempo drum n bass and atmospheric live dub. Yep, dub is definately my favourite genre. Just imagine bliss.. welcome, you’ve found dub. Example:

And although the lighting was blinding at times – flashing bright blue and red – it added to the surrealness of the sound. Was good to hear ‘For The Love Of It’, even without Tike Taane around.

If you get a chance, go see these guys.. they’ve been together for around 20 years or so and are really tight on stage. The positive vibes around the place are truely contagious and it was one of those sets that you didn’t really want to end.

Might have to check out 380 Underground every Wednesday in Bondi.. well not every Wednesday, it’s just called that but who knows. So yeah, cheers Foreign Dub for making it a really good weekend
